We took a trip to Taketomi Island from Ishigaki Island. The only way to get there is by ferry from Ishigaki. We took the high speed ferry that took about 15 minutes port to port.
Taketomi island is a small island with more bicycles than cars. There are a handful of bike rental places and we chose the one closest to the ferry. We were able to get bikes for our 10 & 6 year old and our friends got bikes with kids seats.
We went to star sand beach first!! We looked for the famous star sand! The star sand is the skeleton of a microorganism that died. They live on off shore reefs and when they die their skeleton washes up on the beaches of Taketomi and a few other islands near by.
After being slightly disappointed because we thought the star sand would be a lot bigger, we moved on. We rode around just checking out the island. We found a random place to eat that was a cafeteria style place. We ordered curry and taco rice and it was delicious.
We watched the water buffalo pull some carts for a while and sadly we didn’t ride one of the carts because we didn’t have time but really we didn’t fall for that over priced tourist trap.
We had a great trip to the island and loved exploring the beauty of a traditional Japanese town.
